History of The Louvre

The Louvre, located in the heart of Paris, France, is one of the world's most renowned and visited museums. Its history dates back to the late 12th century when it was originally constructed as a fortress by King Philip Augustus. Over the centuries, it underwent several transformations, eventually evolving into a royal palace during the Renaissance period.

In the 18th century, during the French Revolution, the Louvre was repurposed as a public museum, showcasing a vast collection of art and historical artifacts. This significant transition marked the beginning of its journey as a cultural and artistic hub, attracting millions of visitors from around the globe.

Hidden Gems in The Louvre Collection

While the Louvre is renowned for iconic masterpieces such as Leonardo da Vinci's "Mona Lisa" and the ancient Greek statue "Venus de Milo," it also houses a treasure trove of lesser-known yet equally remarkable works of art. These hidden gems offer visitors a chance to discover lesser-explored facets of the museum's rich and diverse collection.

The Winged Victory of Samothrace

One such hidden gem is the "Winged Victory of Samothrace," a stunning Hellenistic marble sculpture depicting the goddess Nike. Perched on a grand staircase, this masterpiece exudes an aura of power and grace, leaving visitors in awe of its intricate craftsmanship.

The Raft of the Medusa

Another captivating piece is Théodore Géricault's "The Raft of the Medusa," a monumental oil painting that vividly portrays the harrowing aftermath of a shipwreck. The intensity and emotion captured in this artwork make it a must-see for art enthusiasts seeking a deeper connection with history and human resilience.

The Wedding Feast at Cana

Tucked away in the Louvre's extensive collection of Italian paintings is Paolo Veronese's "The Wedding Feast at Cana." This large-scale masterpiece immerses viewers in a vibrant depiction of a biblical scene, showcasing Veronese's mastery of color and composition.

It was nice that it was conducted in Swiss-German, even if not incredibly exciting. However, it was absolutely worth it to skip the wait at the Louvre and be taken to the interesting spots!

The guide had to really impress me for a 5-star rating.

We were supposed to be at the equestrian monument 10 minutes before the tour, and we managed to do so. In hindsight, it turned out the guide was already there, and we (my 10-year-old daughter and I) were worried if we would even find the guide. She spotted us and had us look around - that wasn't great!! But the tour itself was absolutely fantastic, very comprehensive, and informative!

traveler – Greece

Everything was perfect... I took the tour (highlights) with my son (elementary school age)... The guide engaged with him and accommodated his interests, explaining everything in a very captivating manner. Thank you very much, we thoroughly enjoyed it, and we will definitely book another tour!

Barbara answered all our questions and did an excellent job of linking the art to history, helping us understand why the work was created in the historical context of the period.
